How to Decorate Your Dorm, On the Cheap

Chances are that your college dorm room isn’t the largest of all rooms. And you probably have a roommate, too, so only half of that room is truly yours. But even though the room might be tiny and bland when you first move in, there’s no reason that you can’t decorate it and give it some of your own personality—without breaking the bank. Follow these tips to give your dorm room a makeover on the cheap:

  • Take your roommate’s style into consideration. Before doing anything, talk with your roommate and see if he or she has any ideas for decorating the room. If your roommate wants to simply cut the room in half and give you both the freedom to do whatever you want with your own half, fine. But your roommate may have similar tastes to you, and in this case, you can combine your decorating ideas and come up with something awesome.
  • Go with a comforter that won’t immediately show dirt. Your bed will often be the place where you eat, do your homework, and more, so chances are, it’s going to get dirty pretty quickly.
  • For some cheap ambient lighting, invest in some Chinese lanterns and hang them from the ceiling.
  • Head to the local thrift store or flea market. Look for items that will add color to your dorm room, such as sheer curtains for your windows or colorful storage bins to keep all your books and music in.
  • Hit up your college’s poster sale. Most colleges have poster sales throughout the year, and they’re great places for you to find cheap wall decorations for your dorm room. Make sure to visit each poster sale your school has—you may find some great treasures for your room!

As you can see, there are plenty of ways that you can decorate your dorm room and keep it fun—without spending a fortune.
